Tonino Lamborghini, the heir of Ferruco Lamborghini, the founder of the industrial empire in the field of mechanics and luxury automobiles, visited Tirana for the first time at the invitation of Prime Minister Edi Rama
In the podcast with Prime Minister Rama, Tonino Lamborghini does not hide the surprise he faced when he came to Tirana. He did not leave Prime Minister Rama without commenting either.
I came here and was completely surprised by the modernity, the cleanliness, the elegance of the new buildings and the preservation of the historical part of your country. I love history, I love architecture.
Your city is wonderful. There is a hospitality that you, then, convey, because, usually, the prime minister represents a people and if he is stern, closed, haughty, it means that, probably, both the country and the people have this type of closure.
Accepting the compliments with a joke, Rama tells him that not everyone shares the same opinion
To please everyone, you must be dead, you must be dead asleep. If you work, if you make decisions, if you try to set things in motion, of course, you don't even have to pretend to please everyone.
Tonino Lamborghini is surprised by the safety offered by Tirana and says that Albania should be talked about more
"I think that we should talk much more about Albania. I believe that it should be done, because your country is very beautiful, it is very similar to the Italian temperament and friendly character, and it is a pity that people think that Albania is still a country where they say, "be careful, be careful". What care! I carefully go to Milan, I carefully go to Naples, but I come here and I can move comfortably.
Everything is clean, in its place, without noise. Congratulations! Congratulations to you who have been running this country for many years and I know, because I am informed, that the people have a lot of appreciation, a lot of consideration for you and you have raised this country, you have raised it to the point that today it is in the position to do dialogue with countries that historically have a deeper tradition. It's not quite the right epithet. So, I can't say anything other than "well done".
Young people in Tirana have also made an impression
"As I walk in your city, which I do not only here, but everywhere I go in the world, I see young people, I see cleanliness. In your city, I saw no writing on the walls. The walls are clean, undamaged. If you notice young people, you see they are all neat, clean, carefully dressed. They don't wear controversial jeans, I want to use that word," commented Lamborghini.
Surprised by Albania, Lamborghini did not hide the desire to invest as it has "great opportunities for tourism"
It was a tremendous surprise. This is so true that I wish to participate, even in a small, very small way, in this flight that you have already taken, because, unfortunately, you have taken it in the meantime, so, before it's too late, I would like to decide just a little, very little... said Lamborghini
Lamborghini is expanding the brand towards the hotel business that 'we are interested in here in Albania' said Rama
Edi Rama: There are also fantastic areas with nature, the sea, the mountains. I always say it, I think that when God created Albania, it was Sunday, a day of rest, he took all the time to put everything in 28 thousand square kilometers, on a small canvas: rivers, mountains, hills, two seas and then lakes from south to north, from east to west, then other inland places that are impressive. There is so much to do in Albania that, in some ways, it is a bit like the Italy of your grandparents, with its shortcomings as well as its advantages.
Tonino Lamborghini: I do not deny that, if this thing is done, I must have an apartment for myself and for the children, definitely. I'm not very young anymore, but I still travel a lot and, then, I have a lot of children. Why not introduce them to a land that is yet to be explored? It's ugly to say that "still to be explored", but for God's sake...
He has shown how his father, who produced tractors, switched to the production of Lamborghini.
According to Tonino Lamborghini, the main reason for the construction of the factory where Lamborghinis began to be produced was Enzo Ferrari. His father drove a Ferrari and when the car's engine had a problem, he went to Enzo Ferrari and told him that "there is something wrong with the car and he can help fix it together".
Enzo Ferrari misbehaved with him and arrogantly told him "how can someone who makes tractors think of me?" This prompted Lamborghini to open a factory and become a strong competitor to Ferrari.
Edi Rama: There is a moment that is shallow, which is the famous episode of the keys, but there is also another moment that you experienced and it has turned into a cult of cinematography, contemporary history, literature, memory, in which your father , Ferruccio Lamborghini, who made tractors but used a Ferrari, goes to the other very dominant colossus of the time, Enzo Ferrari, and says, "there's something wrong with your car's engine and I can give you a hand", without ever realizing that another Italian excellence would be born from that meeting, which was and continues to be Lamborghini. Enzo Ferrari behaved badly, he behaved, let's say, arrogantly, saying "how can someone who manufactures tractors care about me?
Tonino Lamborghini: You don't know how to give my cars, go drive your tractors.
Edi Rama: He then returns home and you witnessed this moment.
Tonino Lamborghini: Very angry. We were sitting at the table, eating tagliatelle, and he said to his mother: "Anita, I need a billion lira". At that time it was a huge value. The mother turns to him and says: "Ferruccio, what are you going to do with a billion lira?" "Ferrari treated me badly. After all, I bought him two Ferraris. I produce 52 tractors a day, let it be a racing car manufacturer, but I employ a thousand internal employees, plus external ones. Why did you treat me like that?! I'll tell him!" My mother was shocked, where could she go to find a billion lira of time? He says: "I don't have them, but even if I do, I need them to move the company forward." "You have to find me!" says. Finally, it awaits: "How much do we spend on advertising?" At that time, Italy was lined on every corner with street signs that read: "Lamborghini tractors, Lamborghini tractors, Lamborghini tractors." Even today you can see them abandoned in the countryside streets of Campania. He says: "Yes, we spend a lot, we spend maybe a billion lira". "Okay, when the contracts expire, don't repeat them. Give me the money. I will compete with Ferrari. I'm going to open a factory and, if it goes well, I'll have more profit in the image than I would have with billboards." And so it happened.
Edi Rama: Brilliant.
Tonino Lamborghini: Pretty brave, pretty brave too.
Edi Rama: Genius ideas need courage, don't they? They are not done in vain.
Tonino Lamborghini: Immediately, he sought out the three most famous engineers. They were all very young, just out of university. They worked at Ferrari and Maserati. He did immediately. He sent a friend to see the grounds and said to him: "Go and bring them here for me!" Now, why was it easy to get them from there? It's not that easy to get a new one from Ferrari or Maserati is it? The winning card was that Lamborghini had already shown that it knew how to produce tractors, had a business that had been developing for years, a technical, technological competence and, above all, an enterprise that had the highest quality of machinery and mechanical research. Now, to say to an engineer, "come with me, let me show you what I'm doing," gives him a kind of enthusiasm. Moreover, we have to consider that the Maserati of that time was a bit tired, if you allow me to use an inappropriate term. Enzo, yes, he did not have an easy character, he was the master and master in every sense. So, my father managed to get them in the blink of an eye, saying, “I want a car. I love it so, so, so and so.” So he didn't say, “Make me a car, but I want it with these features. I want a four cylinder engine, dual ignition, 12 carburetors. Back in the day, all the cars, Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin, had springs. Now, anyone of a certain age knows that cars used to slide in and out of corners because, with the crossbow, the car bounced uphill. Bringing independent wheels, which were just starting to be seen in Formula 1, was a big step forward. That was the reason why, with these very clear ideas, these young engineers were filled with great enthusiasm and everything took off quickly. Just think that, in nine months, nine months, the first working prototype was presented. Today, for nine months, he cannot do anything.
Edi Rama: Did Enzo Ferrari react to this?
Tonino Lamborghini: Of course not, except for a confession made with a great journalist of the time, who was called Gino Rancatti... Gino Rancatti sent me a letter that I keep, in which it was said that for the first time, Enzo Ferrari admitted that he had wrong and that perhaps he should have refrained, because he had given birth to a competitor.
Edi Rama: From what I have learned, I have the impression that his intuition about what he thought Ferrari should do with the engine turned out to be correct.
Tonino Lamborghini: Yes, because my father tried it himself. In the Ferrari that burned the friction, he mounted a normal "Ferodo" friction that he mounted on tractors. The dimensions matched perfectly, so it was assembled, tested and the car responded to the stresses with zero problems. That's why Ferrucio, my father, went to Ferrari, without any arrogance, without any pride, saying that, basically, I'm going to a colleague, a co-entrepreneur, to say, "listen, you're trading this for this, the problem is solved". He did it without any arrogance, as a customer. He waited two hours. While waiting two hours in the hall - this is what my father told me - he said to himself: "I produce 52 tractors a day. I have 1,000 employees. I have two Ferraris and this one makes me wait two hours?” Then, in Italy at that time, you addressed the other with "you". This one comes and addresses him with "you". Ferrari speaks to my father with "you".
"But why does he address me with 'you'?"
Those years, when I went to high school, if someone was two or three years older than me, you addressed them as "you". Then, of course, we became friends and talked with "you", but, at first, it was with "you". "Good luck, this is how he allows himself." This was already bothering him. Then, that was the story. Let's pass it on to young people. I don't know if you have "you" and "you" in your language
Edi Rama: Yes, we have.
