The Court of Appeal in Tirana has rejected Gjon Shkambi's request to be released from detention.

Arguing that he is not the perpetrator of the crime that shocked the country with the murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja and the injury of two other parties to the process, Shkambi appealed to the Court of Appeal against the prison sentence ordered by the First Instance Court.

Gjon Shkambi claims that he was unaware of the actions of his nephew Elvis Shkambi, who fired his gun at Judge Kalaja as soon as the latter read the decision against his request regarding a property conflict.

The 30-year-old nephew, Elvis Shkambi, who is also in custody, had not appealed the decision to request a change in the security measure.

Yesterday, Shkambi shared a letter from his cell expressing remorse for the crime, while recounting the ordeal he went through with the police, prosecutor, and court to retrieve the property he claimed to have inherited.
