"We need to form a civic alliance against crime, corruption and the mafia."
This is what Dom Gjergj Meta said, invited to "Debate" by Alba Alishani, on A2 CNN.
"In Italy, the mafia was fought not only through the police, but also with a civic alliance, where children were told that being a mafia member is a bad thing. Growing drugs to get rich is a bad thing. Unfortunately, today's children see these things as models. They see their friends who go and stay at home for a few months, drinking and coming back in nice cars, and they want to go there themselves ," said Dom Gjergj Meta.
"All together, we must form an alliance of good. We all need to improve, even the media, which have an extraordinary mission, must be part of this alliance for the improvement of our society," Dom Gjergj Meta added.
Dom Gjergj Meta also commented on the serious incident at the "Fan Noli" school, where a 14-year-old was killed after a fight.
According to him, fights at this age are normal, but "the whole issue is what approach the adults have."
"The last incident is serious. I don't have children, but at my age, that child could have been my child. It's a pain that no one can take away from those parents. They didn't react in time. I remember when I was 13-14 years old, I had a fight with a friend of mine. At one point he pulled out a knife, but thank God there was a teacher nearby and nothing happened. I went straight to my father and told him what had happened to me. My father took me and we went to that boy's father. Our two fathers had grown up together. They put us in front of each other and said: "Aren't you ashamed? We've never spoken, and you two are doing this? Now you'll agree with each other and we don't want this to ever happen in our families again." I've always remembered this episode. Fights happen because at that age you think you have the world in your hands, you think you're immortal, but the whole point is what approach the adults had. "Doctors say that instead of curing a disease, we should prevent it. Today, the preventive approach is lacking," declared Dom Gjergj Meta.
"Everything starts in the family. When I am asked about bullying, I say that bullying starts in the family. If you hear your parent say "that blind person, that cripple", the child tends to imitate what you do. So, when he goes to school, he will look at a boy or girl with glasses and say "you blind person". The second is the school. Unfortunately, the education system has collapsed and more is needed in education policies than information. You can be an excellent student, but if you lack formation as a person and as a human being... The third aspect is religion or social spaces that help. But, these do not replace either the family or the school" , added Dom Gjergj Meta.
