'M*TRA for rent', unknown EGGS BUSINESS in Tirana: 900 euros for...
Womb for rent

It was the end of summer 2023, when Mariana.P from the city of Durrës, living in Tirana, found herself facing a dilemma. After being fired from her minimum-wage job, Mariana's metropolitan dream came undone.

The 24-year-old had two choices: to find the money to pay the rent in order not to lose her house in the capital or to return to her place of birth, where her sick mother was waiting for her.

The young woman could only be helped by a "quick cure" and the solution was given by one of the girls who lived together. He gave you eggs.

"The girl I shared the rent with gave me some information and I called the first clinic I found. I didn't consider that there could be criteria or side effects. I just wanted to know the price of my eggs. I didn't work for months, but I couldn't go back to my family," she says, newspapers like .

And the price they told him was convincing: 900 euros for a donation. With them she could pay several months' rent.

"For me, 900 euros in those moments were salvation. I paid the rent and put something aside. But the quick lek tastes you", says AP with a laugh and admits that he did it again.

" The second time the payment for the eggs was increased by 200 euros and I would no longer pass the tests the first time. The rent of the house must be paid every month ", says Mariana as if in an attempt to excuse herself.

Being careful about the identity of her co-habitant, Mariana reveals that she sold the eggs to pay off a loan.

Although Albanian law prohibits donating eggs for profit, this is the only way to find them. Local clinics that perform in vitro fertilization also accept this.

"We are offered and we accept. The demand is only growing and of course the goal is economic. None of the girls come here because they are thinking of honoring a couple", says anonymously one of the doctors who performs the process of suctioning the eggs.

Gynecologist Ardi Prushi says that the "market" for selling eggs in the country is not yet consolidated and that many girls do not have information about such an option.

"Clinics and hospitals that perform In Vitro Fertilization procedures are definitely very interested. It is very difficult to find donors, but this is because there is no campaign or publicity for this procedure. In fact, from experience, many girls are not even aware of such a fact and possibility", explains Dr. Prushi, adding that they do not "convince" the girls, but welcome anyone who knocks on the clinic's doors.

“Kur i mora, pyetja e parë ishte ‘sa vjeçe je’.

Women who have been lucky enough to become mothers say that a child is the greatest love a woman can experience. It comes with responsibility, obsession and fear. But the AP seems totally attracted to this feeling.

Scientifically, a child born from egg donation carries some of the donor's genetic material, but does not make it her child. And with this explanation, the young woman is comforted.

"He is not my child, he develops in another woman's body. I don't even know who took them. My goal was money."

For the money, she decided to donate her eggs a third time, but then the complications started.

"After the third time I had constant problems with the menstrual cycle and the balance of hormones. I gained weight without realizing it and had constant breakouts. I don't think there will be a fourth time. The costs are becoming greater than the profits", concludes the AP, its story.

In the European market, until 2018, when the last updated data are available, over 1 million egg donation procedures were performed.

The capital of this phenomenon is Spain, which exports them even to countries outside the borders. The average payment of a donation in Spain is 1,100 euros.

The US, on the other hand, has created a trillion dollar market from the sale of eggs and by 2030 it is expected to double.

Meanwhile, in Albania, a draft law that "regulates" this market and legislates surrogacy has fueled debate among communities and experts, who, regardless of their position, do not accept the introduction of money in the middle.

" So far everything seems normal, couples who cannot have children by nature start to dream. Families affect happiness!... and then continues the trafficking, business, leku ", says the pastor, Akil Pano./ Si
