It appears that there was a long-standing conflict in the Gjoni family, which escalated on Saturday evening into verbal violence between father and son.
The incident, which is suspected to have been motivated by family problems, initially led to a fight between the father, Hekuran Gjoni, 74 years old, and his son, Asimi, 41 years old, a father of two children.
The big fight started when the whole family was eating dinner, around 6:50 PM, when the father slapped his son. The son then punched him, knocking him off his chair.
At that moment, Hekurani's daughter, Asimi's sister, intervened, demanding an explanation from her brother as to how their father could be hit like that.
But, it is suspected that Asim also hit his sister and as a result, the father got up, grabbed the bread knife from the corner of the table and hit his son. As a result, the son received serious injuries. Although he was taken to the hospital, he could not survive because one of the blows had hit his vital organs.
This is the dynamics of the serious crime that shook Tirana on Saturday evening, where the Gjoni family, who came from Dibra, had settled in the "Kodra e Priftit" neighborhood.
The police arrived at the scene and escorted the elderly man in a serious emotional state, while the rest of the family was in great shock due to the incident.
Throughout Saturday, the police had difficulty obtaining full testimony from Hekuran Gjoni, who learned that his son had passed away, while yesterday, the investigative team was able to fully document his version of the event and the conflicts with his son.
At the time of the serious incident, it is learned that the 41-year-old's children were also at the table, who witnessed the entire incident between their father and grandfather.
Evidence and investigations
Yesterday, Tirana police announced that they had arrested 74-year-old Hekuran Gjoni, on charges of “murder due to family relations.” During questioning, he gave his version of events, stating that his son had been bullying and cursing him for a long time, an act he committed again on Saturday evening as soon as they sat down at the table to have dinner as a family.
In the testimony given yesterday morning, Hekurani told the police: " My son, Asim, had been making fun of me for a long time. Last night at dinner we were eating bread at the table. The boy started making fun of me again. After I got angry, I stood up and slapped him during the argument. Then the boy stood up and shot me, where I fell down. At this moment my daughter intervened, where she shouted at Asim why did you shoot your father. Asim then hit his sister as well. At this moment my vision went dark and I stood up, took the knife and hit the boy ."
The testimony given many hours after the escort to the police station led the investigation team to conclude that there had been an early conflict between father and son, but it is suspected that they may have also been alcohol consumers and the incident took such a turn, partly as a result of drinking.
But there was also testimony from residents of the area, who confirmed the family quarrels.
The police and the investigation team will return to the scene and will also obtain other evidence related to the causes that led to the ongoing conflicts.
Testimony is expected to be taken from people who were present in the family on the night of the incident, mainly the victim's daughter, wife, and mother.
The father appears to have shown signs of remorse regarding what happened to his family, as he denied having intended to kill her, but after hitting his daughter, he thought he could scare her with the bread knife so that the fighting in the house would stop.
