Almost a month after being handcuffed in Istanbul, Turkey, Dritan Rexhepi, the so-called "Albanian king of cocaine", has lost a court battle in the Constitutional Court in Tirana.
Rexhepi sought the annulment of the decision of the Supreme Court of November 27, 2020, which had upheld the sentence of 25 years in prison given to him by the Court for Serious Crimes for the charge of "premeditated murder".
With the decision made by the Constitutional Court, the decision of the Supreme Court that ordered Dritan Rexhepi to be sentenced to 25 years in prison, for the murder of the policeman Durim Kasmi in 1999 in the center of Kruja and the murder of Ramazan Baki, is automatically left in force.
According to Rexhepi, his right to due process was violated in the High Court. The alleged violations by Rexhepaj were not considered, as his individual constitutional appeal was filed beyond the 4-month time limit provided by law.
Rexhepaj's arguments that at the time of the announcement of the Supreme Court's decision he was serving a prison sentence in Ecuador, or even the postal delays for the power of attorney issued in Ecuador for young lawyers in Albania, did not convince the Assembly of Constitutional Judges. who unanimously decided not to pass the case for consideration in the plenary session.
This is the second time that Rexhepi has appealed to the Constitutional Court against his sentence of 25 years in prison. Through her in 2018, he was able to return the case to the Supreme Court for retrial.
Since November 2023, the Albanian authorities have turned to Turkish Justice, requesting the extradition of Gramoz Rexhep to Albania.
But Italy and Belgium are also in the race for Rexhepi's extradition.
