If you drive in Albania, especially on the highway, you will face great stress and the fear that you are seriously endangering your life.

Try traveling, for example, on the Tirana-Durrës highway.

Cars that overtake in a frightening manner, that stick close and exert pressure to open the way, and if it does not do so in the moment, that pull out in front of it from the right side and deliberately brake in front, to crash, or other dangerous maneuvers, are a daily sight on this highway.

And accidents, of course, are daily, often with casualties.

When the victims are children, like those in Durrës or Elbasan, numerous comments explode online, calling for stricter regulations.

Added to them are politicians, who find fault only with drivers, not with the infrastructure, for which they are responsible.

But is tightening measures and increasing fines the only solution?

The fact is that fines aimed solely at increasing the number do not have any real impact on increasing road safety.

During 2025 alone, over 1 million 100 thousand fines were imposed by the traffic police.

But what has been the concrete result in reducing accidents, aggressiveness, and loss of life on the road?

Accidents continue to happen, and so does the aggressiveness of drivers.

Road safety is not improved by massively punishing drivers who drive a few kilometers over the limit on interurban roads with acceptable standards.

The focus should be on aggressive drivers, dangerous overtaking, street racing, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and criminal behavior that takes people's lives.

That this is not a problem that can be solved simply by filling blocks with fines.
