The former mayor of Durrës, Vangjush Dako, leaves his prison cell today. Dako was returned to his cell by the Appeals Court of the Republic of Albania on September 16, where he was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison for the criminal offense of "Abuse of office".
Based on the calculation of the time spent in pre-trial detention together with the 'house arrest' that Dako has served throughout the entire investigative process in his charge, he should have served 10 days in prison, but 4 of which he spent in the hospital.
At the moment when the agents arrived at his house to execute the security measure, the former mayor's health condition deteriorated with symptoms of arrhythmia, anxiety and problems with a herniated disc. For this reason, he was hospitalized for 4 days in the infectious disease ward at the QSUT. Referring to the Criminal Code, each day in the hospital is equal to 1 day in prison. Vangjush Dako left the hospital premises on September 21 and went to the cell where he was to serve 6 days in prison from the court sentence.
Dako was arrested on June 6, 2023. He was released in February 2024 after his pre-trial detention period expired and has been under 'house arrest' since then. On November 25, 2024, the GJKKO decided to sentence him to 2 years and 8 months in prison for abuse of office on two counts.
Vangjush Dako was convicted of abuse of office on 2 occasions, while he was the mayor of Durrës. This concerns the construction of a building 12 years ago in Durrës, which collapsed in the 2019 earthquake. The building permit for the building was revoked, three years after the construction was completed, and residents had entered, legalizing 4 floors without permission. Likewise, the construction itself was not carried out according to the project approved by the Durrës Municipality.
While the other case of abuse of office by Dako is related to the abuse of the tender for the construction of a promenade in 2014-2015, discovered by the Supreme Audit Office, which caused 18 million lek damage to the state budget.
According to the decision of the Special Court, Vangjush Dako is deprived of the right to exercise public functions for a period of five years.
