The murder of Rezart Arshiaj

A security camera that - unexpectedly - does not work due to a murder committed minutes before the start of a procession by one, maybe two killers, leaving on a scooter.

It is a mystery for the Pisa police officers, who since Sunday night, shortly after 21:00, are trying to understand who shot five times in the direction of Rezart Arshiaj.

Known to everyone as Ben, the 37-year-old Albanian, who worked in the construction field (laying tiles), married and the father of two children, had just returned to the yard of his house, which is located in front of the church of San Michele Arcangelo, in Oratoio, a suburb of Pisa.

The Italian media reports that the dynamics of what is believed to be a genuine assassination are being reconstructed, but it seems that two killers were waiting for him in the backyard.

Ben was still inside the van when the killer approached him and – armed with a small caliber .22 pistol – fired at least 8 shots at him: 5 hitting the body, two hitting him in the head.

His neighbor was the first to come running. Then his wife, IH, and their 9-year-old son saw what no one would ever want to see. The woman fell ill and was hospitalized, while the child and his 5-year-old sister were sent to a relative.

By the time the ambulance arrived, Ben had passed away. Near the venue, where the church is located, there were many believers in the procession, which Don Massimo Garibaldi later canceled as a sign of mourning.

But the evidence gathered has muddied the waters. There are those who spoke of one killer, those who had seen two people and those - even - three of them.

The victim – pending obtaining a regular residence permit – has no police record: for two years he had lived in via dell'Oratoio. Those who knew Ben describe him as a hard worker who took care of his family.

Even on Sunday, for example, he demonstrated this: he had been with his wife and children to eat at a fast-food restaurant.

Then he took the car and the van to go wash them at the car wash. In the end he went to work for a relative. At 21:00 he returned home for dinner: he was killed with impressive coolness.

From an initial reconstruction it appears that the escape of the killer, or possibly two killers, took place on a scooter, but no one would have explained in which direction.

There are no security cameras, but police found a private one in via Calatafimi, which may have filmed at least the scooter and whoever was on it.

But surprisingly, the electronic device was out of order and returned to recording at 10:00 p.m., an hour after the murder.

The owner of the camera explains: "It recorded on Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday it went bad until 10pm, I thought it had been sabotaged." The police are now conducting investigations in this regard.

And if the Prosecutor's Office has already ordered the autopsy, the investigators are trying to understand if the killing on Sunday evening is related to the wounding of an Albanian that happened in July in San Frediano a Settimo: the victim, in that case, was also shot with a small caliber .

While no scenario can be ruled out, it appears – for now – that the two episodes are not connected. However, no investigative hypothesis can be ruled out. The Italian police have been in contact with the Albanian police in the hope of getting some help.

In Ospedeletto, 2 kilometers from Oratoio, officers seized a stolen scooter in early September.

The police also took the victim's cell phone to find out if there could be any clues: inside the cell phone could be the key to what currently remains a mystery. Assuming there really is a key to solving this case.

Neighbors say that Ben did not frequent bars or billiards in the area: "He would take a coffee in his hand and leave", - the owner of a bar told the Italian media.

Meanwhile, relatives have arrived at his house. Arshiaj's brother-in-law left Germany to join his sister, who returned home after being taken to a Pisa hospital due to an emotional collapse after seeing her husband die.

"She's upset, she does nothing but repeat his name," the man explains, "does anyone have any idea what might have happened?" I wanted to see the children, because they are the ones who need it. If Ben had any enemies, God only knows. He was an honest worker and there was no shadow about him."
