Measles enters Albania, 11 cases are confirmed in Tirana and Durrës

The Institute of Public Health has announced that 11 cases of measles have been confirmed in our country.

It is known that 6 of these cases have family ties and are unvaccinated. Also, it is known that the infected are children aged between 1 and 9 years.

These cases are confirmed in the city of Tirana and Durres. According to the Institute of Public Health, but also the World Health Organization, vaccination against measles has suffered a significant decline since the coronavirus pandemic. It is known that only in Tirana, in recent years, there are about 13 thousand children aged 0-5 years who are not vaccinated.

Measles is a highly contagious and serious viral disease caused by a virus of the Paramyxoviridae family. It is spread mainly through the air, sprays and through direct contact. The virus infects the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body.

The World Health Organization, according to a recent report, says there is an alarming 30-fold increase in measles cases in Europe during 2023. The WHO warns that cases are on the rise and urgent measures are needed to prevent further spread.

"More than 30,000 people were infected in 2023, compared to 941 in all of 2022," according to the latest report, the BBC reports. The WHO believes that these figures have come as a result of fewer children being vaccinated against the disease during the Covid pandemic.
