Europol arrests 6 mercenaries hired to take hostage Albanian drug boss who stole tons of cannabis!

Europol has arrested six people, part of a group of mercenaries who were hired by a rival gang to take an Albanian drug trafficking boss hostage.

According to Europol's official announcement, the operation took place in several European Union countries as well as in the United Kingdom, where Latvian citizens were arrested, some of whom had experience in the French Foreign Legion and were highly skilled and had sophisticated weaponry.

According to investigations, they were contracted to kidnap the leader of an Albanian drug trafficking network, who is suspected of orchestrating the theft of several tons of cannabis worth millions of euros.

Europol announcement:

On 12 November 2025, Europol supported a German-led investigation targeting a group of mercenaries hired by a criminal network to kidnap the leader of a rival drug trafficking gang. The operation involved law enforcement authorities from Denmark, France, Latvia and the United Kingdom.

The coordinated operation focused on Latvian nationals, some of whom had experience in the French Foreign Legion. These highly trained individuals were equipped with professional equipment and were operating on behalf of an organized crime group. They were contracted to kidnap the leader of an Albanian drug trafficking ring, who is suspected of orchestrating the theft of several tons of cannabis worth millions of euros.

On the day of the operation, four individuals were arrested in Denmark, France, Latvia and the United Kingdom, while two others, who had been arrested in October 2014 in Germany, have already been convicted by the courts. Europol played a crucial role by facilitating the exchange of information, ensuring operational coordination and providing analytical support. On the day of the operation, Europol deployed an expert to Nice, France, to facilitate the real-time exchange of information and to cross-check operational information with Europol databases, providing immediate leads to investigators on the ground.

This operation is linked to the phenomenon of 'Violence-as-a-Service', in which perpetrators offer their services to carry out violent acts on behalf of other criminal syndicates. In this particular case, well-trained specialists are hired by organised crime groups to carry out violent acts. This modus operandi is increasingly being detected in various operations related to serious and organised crime. The investigation of the perpetrators' activities highlights the high level of this service, as it often involves the use of former members of special forces.

Some of the suspects in this case are former soldiers of the French Foreign Legion. This represents an alarming trend emerging from the war in Ukraine. Former combat-trained soldiers returning from the front may be using their skills for organized crime, posing a potential threat. As the war in Ukraine continues and potentially intensifies in its aftermath, Europe may face an increasing number of these well-trained individuals engaging in criminal activities. It is essential to monitor this development and prepare for the potential security challenges it poses.
