Recently, the " Night Jail " has become operational as an alternative way of serving the sentence.

Through a letter days ago, the General Directorate of Prisons informed all the courts in the country, the general prosecutor and the chief prosecutor of SPAK , that the open prison in Tirana has become functional.

The letter is dated August 30 and was distributed to 23 justice institutions, including all courts of both levels, KLGJ and KLP as well as the head of the execution of criminal decisions to show them the address of the open prison.

The open prison is located in the former women's prison in the "Ali Demit" area.

The category of prisoners who can earn imprisonment at night and be free during the day are citizens who have less than 6 months of their sentence left for minor crimes and on the condition that the penitentiary commission assesses them as harmless, as well as anyone who during the trial was sentenced to half-life.

This does not mean that the prison has no guards.

Instead, prison guards stay on duty in shifts like their colleagues in any prison. The convict enters at 5:00 p.m., stays overnight and leaves early in the morning.

In five years, in the entire country, half freedom has been applied to only 97 people, a figure that is argued to be negligible due to the lack of an open prison.

Two days ago, the General Director of Prisons Klevis Qose announced on social networks that: "We are ready to populate the open prison "Ali Demi", the newest structure in Albania. This project, financed by the Albanian government and with the support of the British Embassy Tirana in increasing and strengthening the capacities of human resources, is expected to prepare persons in conflict with the law to adapt as naturally as possible to civic life. Thank you Mr. Duncan Nutt, Prison Operational Improvement Expert, and Mr. Adam Connolley, Director of HMP Haverigg Open Prison in the United Kingdom, for their contribution to the training of our staff .

Meanwhile, yesterday the Ministry of Justice and the General Directorate of Prisons, with the support of the British Embassy, announced that they are finalizing the preparations for the population of the open prison "Ali Demi".

This investment by the Albanian government aims to improve the penitentiary system through rehabilitation and faster reintegration of prisoners who are preparing to return to civilian life.

With the help of the British embassy, support has been provided for the improvement of the infrastructure and the training of human resources for the management of this new institution of this nature.

The General Director of Prisons, Mr. Klevis Qose, participated in the first day of the training, where Mr. Duncan Nutt, prison expert and representative of the British state, and Adam Connolley, Director of HMP Haverigg Open Prison in England.

Mr. Qose thanked the British Embassy for their continuous contribution to improving the infrastructure of Albanian prisons and to preparing staff through training and study visits to British prisons.

"Today we are witnessing a special moment for our penitentiary system, with the open prison management training," he said.

"The opening of this prison is the fruit of our cooperation with Britain and allows us to adopt their advanced standards. I thank the British team for their support and for the contribution they are giving to the training of our team."

Adam Connolley thanked the Albanian side for the invitation and emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation.

"We also learn from your experiences. The open prison system offers great opportunities for the rehabilitation and preparation of prisoners for full freedom, and we are happy to share our experiences in this field.

Duncan Nutt, in his speech, emphasized that British support will continue to help the Albanian authorities in opening and managing this prison as successfully as possible, underlining that open prisons are a key element in the reintegration of prisoners.
