Foreign Minister Elisa Spiropali commented today on SPAK's indictment of Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku. Spiropali said that in Albania there are no untouchables and that everyone is responsible before the law.
The chief diplomat added that the majority is determined to fight impunity at all levels.
Her reaction came after being asked by MP Agron Shehaj, chairman of the "Mundësia" party, why Deputy Prime Minister Balluku does not resign from office after being indicted by SPAK for corruption, but appears side by side with Prime Minister Edi Rama.
"You said that the government does not conduct investigations but SPAK does. I don't know if you are aware, but in the history of Europe, for the first time, a deputy prime minister has been indicted. How do you explain in your meetings the fact that the deputy prime minister, despite being indicted, continues to be in office and does not resign. How do you explain to your colleagues when you ask them to push forward EU integration. For them, it is normal that the deputy prime minister continues to be in office despite being indicted by SPAK for corruption?", asked MP Shehaj.
Minister Spiropali said that under no circumstances will the majority attack prosecutors or judges, or comment on specific issues or justice issues.
"This is something that has divided us since we undertook the justice reform, since we decided that political power must remove its grip on the power of justice and when we made the historic decision as a majority to fight impunity wherever it appears, at all levels," said Spiropali.
Meanwhile, MP Shehaj continued by saying that Deputy Prime Minister Balluku is not under investigation, but has been charged with corruption.
"Without a trace of shame, she has come out today side by side with the prime minister. A few days ago Rama said that Erion Veliaj should come out, today she comes out side by side with the accused and foolish deputy prime minister ," said Shehaj.
In her response, Minister Spiropali said that there are no untouchables in Albania.
"There are no untouchables in Albania. And this is the big difference between us and an old policy that continues to make criminal charges against opponents the policy of the day. We do not do this. Everyone is responsible before the law, everyone, everyone is responsible before their own face and before their own electorate," said Spiropali.
