After a two-month pause, operations to send migrants rescued in the Mediterranean to Italy's processing centers in Albania will resume, well-informed sources told ANSA on Friday.

The Italian Navy patrol ship Cassiopea is currently near the Sicilian island of Lampedusa and is ready to transfer migrants to the Shëngjin and Gjader centers, which Italy opened last October to process asylum seekers.

Italian judges refused to uphold the detention of the first two small groups of asylum seekers taken to Albania under an agreement between Rome and Tirana, referring their cases to the European Court of Justice, which had previously ruled that an applicant could not undergo a fast-track procedure that could lead to their repatriation if the country of origin was not considered completely safe.

The countries of origin in question, Bangladesh and Egypt, were not deemed safe "throughout their entire territory".

The government in December attempted to overcome this obstacle with a measure listing 19 safe countries for repatriation, including Bangladesh and Egypt.
