The debate two months ago about the number of Albanians in English prisons between Prime Minister Edi Rama and the leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage seems to have died down for the time being.
Albania's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Uran Ferizi, met with Nigel Farage to tell him that the head of Reform UK was repeating false information, claiming that one in 50 Albanians in Britain was in prison.
The meeting was confirmed to Top Channel by Ambassador Uran Ferizi himself who said that he had an informal conversation in Farage's office where he told him that: "It is completely untrue, and yet it is being repeated on GB News and by your politicians," said Uran Ferizi, the ambassador, who is attending the Reform UK conference.
I took this action, says Ambassador Ferizi, because official statistics are being distorted, which are taken and used to make completely different claims, which do not come close to reality."
As Top Channel reported a few weeks ago, data from the Albanian embassy in London have contradicted reports that the number of Albanians in Britain is 53,000, a figure used as a source for the "one in 50" claim.
Ambassador Ferizi says that during the meeting with Farage, he told him that "it was deeply unfair to disseminate what are basically lies. They are simply not true."
My perception, Ambassador Uran Ferizi continues, was that Nigel Darage showed understanding when he heard these and was willing to review the statistics.
"Also, I emphasized that Albanians are an excellent example of people who integrate well in Britain. They work hard, learn the language, customs and rules of the country. I told him that it was deeply unfair for a country that prides itself on its honesty, and he seems to appreciate that," said Ambassador Ferizi at the meeting with Brexit father Nigel Farage, who continues to have an open invitation from Edi Rama to visit Albania.
An invitation that has been welcomed by the controversial politician, who polls put many points away from the Conservative opposition and with a high probability of being the next prime minister in England.
