Elly Schlein, the leader of the Italian Democratic Party, made a surprise visit to the migrant camp in Gjadra, where migrants from third countries who are caught on the coast of Italy are accommodated before they land on land.

"We just finished visiting the center that the Italian government wanted to build by spending 800 million euros," she wrote on social media.

Schlein states that the center is empty, while the agreement with Albania violates fundamental human rights and violates Italian and European laws.

"An empty center where we were greeted by very professional staff from the police force, who are here to monitor the security of a center that is empty and will remain empty," says Schlein.

The opposition in Italy considers the investment made by the Meloni Government in the migrant reception centers in Lezha as a loss.

Schlein emphasized that due to the Government's stubborn ideology, Italian resources continue to be wasted.

A few days ago, former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, part of the opposition, proposed that these immigrant centers be turned into prisons, where Albanians who are currently in Italian prisons would serve their sentences.

"That migrant center will never work. But the money has already been spent. My proposal is simple: we place around 2,000 Albanian convicts who are currently in Italian prisons in the migrant center. This way we close the super failure. We reduce costs and no longer keep carabinieri and police in Albania, they are needed in Italy. These agents are needed for our roads. Let's transform the migrant center into a prison for Albanian convicts and do this immediately", Renzi expressed.

The migrant centers in Lezha, established based on the agreement between the Meloni and Rama governments, were to receive migrants who would be caught at sea, but the first two groups of migrants who were transported by Guardia Di Finanza vehicles were returned to Italy following the decisions of the Italian courts.
