Albanian citizens will pay 25.5 thousand euros per day for the next two years to maintain the two floating thermal power plants in Vlora, despite receiving nothing in return.

KESH officially closed the tender for the operation and maintenance of the Vlora Tigers for the next two years.

The giant contract with a total value of 1.67 billion lek excluding VAT or 18.6 million euros has been entrusted to the company "RENCO Spark sh.pk", which is part of the Italian engineering group "Renco Spa".

But the figure of 25.5 thousand euros per day is not the entire bill that will be paid. It only provides for maintenance and operation. Meanwhile, millions of euros more will be paid to purchase fuel. The supply of fuel (Heavy Fuel Oil - HFO and Light Fuel Oil - LFO) is provided and paid entirely by KESH sh.a.

Renco was part of the consortium with the American company Excelerate, which brought and maintained these assets for the past two years against a staggering bill of 70 million dollars.

Massive waste of public money
The two ships are considered one of the most flagrant cases of massive waste of public money. They were brought to Albania in 2022 with the argument of strengthening energy security.

According to the agreement with Excelerate, the Albanian Corporation paid $94,000 per day for a two-year period for the lease of these two ships, while the amount of energy produced by them is unknown.

In total, the two-year agreement was worth about $70 million, two-thirds of which were rental payments, while the rest were maintenance costs.

In the end, KESH paid $70 million to acquire two unprofitable assets, which have an extremely high cost of energy production.

This is also the reason that during the rental period they were used very little, despite the fact that the money was paid in full./ Kapital
