"The God of Football" in the White House/ Trump: I am privileged to
Lionel Messi/ Donald Trump

US President  Donald Trump welcomed Lionel Messi and Inter Miami to the White House on Thursday to celebrate the team's 2025 MLS Cup title, but began with a lengthy speech on the ongoing conflict with Iran.

After the Inter Miami team took the stage, Trump entered the East Room of the White House accompanied by Messi and club owner Jorge Mas, after an eventful day on the political front in which he fired the head of National Security, Kristi Noem.

The White House chief then turned his attention to the Major League Soccer champions , lavishing praise on Lionel Messi.

Trump: I am privileged to host Lionel Messi, no American President has ever had the chance to host him. My son, Barron, said to me: 'Dad, do you know who is coming today?' I said no, I have a lot of work to do. He said; 'Messi!'. He is a fan of yours, he thinks you are a fantastic person and I think you have met before - Donald Trump continued - he is a big football fan, but he is a big fan of you and of a gentleman named Ronaldo.
