UEFA changes rules, Champions is made from 32 to 36 teams

The number of teams in the Champions League will increase from 32 to 36 from the 2024-2025 season under changes adopted by UEFA. Under the new format, each team will play eight games in 10 weeks spread throughout the season.

Two of the four additional venues will be awarded to the highest-performing championships in any individual UEFA club racing season.

UEFA President Alexander Ceferin said it means that "the dream of participating in the Champions League remains vulnerable to all clubs".

An earlier proposal to book two Champions League places for teams that have set historic records in this competition was not approved by UEFA.

Critics argued that it would have favoured traditionally 'bigger' clubs and provided them with security alternatives if they performed poorly in a season.

"UEFA has clearly shown today that we are fully committed to respecting the fundamental values of the sport and defending the key principle of open racing, with qualifications based on sporting merits, fully in line with european sports values and model", Ceferin said.

"We are convinced that the chosen format achieves the right balance and that it will improve competitive balance and generate solid revenues that can be distributed to clubs, leagues and throughout European football" he said.

Ceferin said the new format was unanimously approved by UEFA's executive committee, with the agreement of European league bodies and national associations.

"Thus qualification will remain simply based on the sporting performance of the season and the dream of participating will remain for all clubs", stated the UEFA President.
