Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced the launch of an investigation to clarify the causes of the serious rail accident in Urda, in the province of Toledo, where the collision between a Renfe train and an Iryo train caused at least 68 deaths and over 50 injuries.

During the visit to the scene, Sánchez stated that the investigations will go to the end and that, if negligence or deficiencies in the security system are found, those responsible will face strict measures.

The accident occurred shortly before 09:00 on Wednesday, at kilometer 118 of the Madrid-Seville railway line, near Urda.

The causes of the collision still remain unclear, while preliminary investigations are examining the possibility of human error.

This is the second serious rail tragedy to hit Spain this year. In January, 46 people lost their lives when two high-speed trains derailed in Adamuz, in the province of Cordoba.

Sánchez stressed that, although these are two serious accidents within the same year, there is still no evidence that they have the same cause. According to him, this issue should be clarified by the independent commission of investigation of railway accidents, the judicial authorities and the institutions responsible for the railway system, including Adif and Renfe.

The Prime Minister underlined that safety in rail transport must be further strengthened, in order to restore citizens' trust in high-speed trains.

"Today Spain is in mourning," Sánchez declared, expressing solidarity with the families of the victims and the injured who are receiving treatment in hospital. He also announced the declaration of three days of national mourning, from October 29 to 31.

"Behind each of the people who lost their lives today, there are shattered lives and shattered families. There is also anxiety among families who still do not know where their relatives are," he said.

Priority, assistance to victims and families

Sánchez announced that, in addition to clarifying the causes of the accident, the government's priority remains to care for the victims and their families, both materially and psychologically.

He praised the work of the emergency teams, the Civil Protection and the cooperation between institutions in dealing with the situation. In this context, he mentioned the authorities of the Castilla-La Mancha region, representatives of the province of Toledo, the municipalities of Urda and Yébenes, as well as the assistance provided by other regions of Spain.

The Prime Minister arrived in Urda around noon on Wednesday to support emergency teams and express his condolences to those affected by the tragedy and their families.
