A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday in Thailand during a match played by Yala FC. Lightning struck the pitch, killing a 24-year-old footballer and injuring at least nine others.

According to reports from e.vnexpress.net, the incident occurred at Santiphap Stadium in Su-ngai Kolok district, Narathiwat province. At the time of the incident, it was raining heavily when a bolt of lightning suddenly struck the pitch. Immediately after the impact, several players fell to the ground, while the injured were transported to the hospital for medical attention.

The most seriously injured was 24-year-old Safwan Awa. Despite doctors' efforts to keep him alive, he did not survive his injuries.

Yala FC responded with a touching message on its official Facebook page, expressing its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased footballer. According to the club's announcement, the director of Yala FC, together with a team delegation, visited the 24-year-old's family to express their condolences and offer support at this difficult time.

"The management staff, coaches, players and all members of Yala FC express their deepest condolences to the family of Safwan Awa (Ing)," the club said in a statement.

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) also released an official statement following the tragedy, expressing solidarity with the footballer's family, friends and club at this difficult time.

Safwan Awa had only signed with Yala FC on July 29. The talented winger was considered one of the team's most important players, having previously scored seven goals in 18 matches with Pattani FC, contributing to the team's promotion to Thai League 2 for the 2025-2026 season.
