Thousands of Milan fans, along with well-known figures from football and public life, paid their final farewell to red and black legend Franco Baresi on Tuesday.

The ceremony took place in the Basilica of Saint Ambrose. Milan's most ardent supporters greeted Baresi with chants of "There is only one captain."

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Milan club, including Gerry Cardinale and Paolo Scaroni, who were greeted with boos from some of the fans.

Franco Baresi's former teammates brought special emotions.

Paolo Maldini, Marco Van Basten and Daniele Massaro were among the figures who accompanied the archmortem.

Franco Baresi remained loyal to just one shirt throughout his career. He made his debut with Milan in the late 1970s and over nearly two decades won 6 Italian championship titles, 3 European Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups and 2 European Super Cups.

After retiring from football in 1997, Milan decided to retire the number 6 shirt.

Baresi won the World Cup in 1982 with the Italian national team. Franco Baresi will be remembered as a leader and one of the most respected figures in world football.
