FIFA withdraws from plan to privatize the World Cup, UEFA: We have lost faith in Infantino

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has backed away from a controversial plan to allow private investors to buy stakes in FIFA competitions, following strong reactions from the international football community.

Infantino himself stated that the project had created divisions and that, despite the support it might have, it was no longer in the interest of its original objective.

UEFA hailed the decision as "a victory for all of football", but stressed that FIFA's current leadership has lost its trust and that of many other members of the football family. The European body accused FIFA of a lack of transparency and "secret agendas", calling for reforms to prevent such situations from recurring.

A few days ago, UEFA had warned of a boycott of all FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup, if the project was not withdrawn, stating that "the World Cup is not for sale."

Infantino's plan envisaged the creation of a commercial company that would manage television rights, sponsorships, tickets and hosting activities for FIFA competitions, while a portion of the shares would be sold to private investors.

The project was also opposed by the Asian (AFC) and North, Central American and Caribbean (CONCACAF) confederations. Meanwhile, Infantino's senior advisor, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned in protest, while FIFA's chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, criticized the plan as a "one-man project" that he said had misled FIFA's own staff.
