Liverpool woke up today with a broken heart to some truly terrible news, one of those that is hard to believe because it is so sudden, brutal, unacceptable. Diogo Jota, the star of the Reds and the Portuguese national team, has died overnight at the age of 28 in a road accident that also killed his younger brother André Silva, a fellow footballer.

A bursting tyre, a Lamborghini that skidded off the road and ended up on the side of the road, a fire engulfing the car and the lifeless bodies of the two boys: the images of what little was left of the car are shocking, it was a horrific end. As the whole world mourns the deaths of the two footballers, Liverpool fans are flooding social media with a request to the Merseyside club: to retire Diogo Jota's number 20 shirt.

The Portuguese striker has been wearing the Reds' colours for five years now, having been bought in 2020 from Wolverhampton. Despite facing very strong competition in the attacking department, Diogo Jota has played and scored a lot: 65 goals and 26 assists were his balance in 182 appearances in total, 9 goals in 37 appearances in the last season, that of the championship won by the wonderful Slot team. In the past five years at Anfield, the Lusitanian representative had also put an FA Cup, two League Cups, a Community Shield on display.

Fans: Liverpool should retire number 20

Much loved by Liverpool fans, they are now asking the club to do something unprecedented in the Reds' history: retire Diogo Jota's shirt number, something that has never been done before for any player. The only shirt to be retired by Liverpool so far has been the number 96, a symbolic gesture made in memory of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough tragedy on April 15, 1989. Fans are now demanding that the number 20, worn by the Portuguese footballer since he arrived in 2020 from Wolves (where he wore number 18, while in the national team he wore 21), is also never used by any Reds player in the future.

Words that Diogo Jota himself had used when he transferred to Merseyside, announcing on that occasion the number he had chosen for his new adventure, precisely 20.

Diogo Jota's teammates – both at club and national team level, most notably Cristiano Ronaldo – are posting heartbreaking tributes to their son in recent hours. In an Instagram story, former Wolves captain Ruben Neves, who played 164 times with Jota for club and country, wrote: "They say you only lose people when you forget them. I will never forget you!" A sentiment that permeates the entire football world and Liverpool in particular in these tragic hours: impossible to forget.
