The tragic accident that claimed the lives of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Jota could have been avoided. According to Portuguese media, the Lamborghini the Jota brothers were travelling in veered off the road on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, just 15km from the Portuguese border.

It is suspected that one of the tires of the super luxury car exploded during an overtaking manoeuvre, causing the vehicle to lose control, roll over and then burst into flames.

The trip had as its final destination the port city of Santander, from where they would take the ferry to Plymouth, England.

Diogo Jota, according to medical sources, had undergone lung surgery and doctors had advised him to avoid flying, so he had chosen the land and sea route to return to England.

CNN Portugal reported that the 28-year-old footballer had left for Liverpool, where he was expected to join the team for pre-season training that begins on Monday.

Sports journalist Victor Pinto, in a connection for CMTV in Portugal, stated: "Diogo sometimes chose to travel by car due to some lung concerns, not serious. And, as is known, there is a ferry that connects Spain with the south of England."

He had only been married a few days to his childhood sweetheart, Rute, in a ceremony in his hometown of Porto on June 22.

His brother, Andre, was only 26 years old. Their loss has shocked not only his family and relatives, but also the sporting community in Portugal and beyond.
