The football world has been shocked by the news of the tragic accident in Spain, where Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother died. The 28-year-old had just married his fiancée Rute Cardoso and had three children. His brother André, two years younger, was also a professional footballer for Penafiel.

Suspected cause of the accident

The puncture and explosion of a tire, which occurred during an attempt to overtake, caused the vehicle to skid, impossible to control by the driver. A little later, the vehicle caught fire, leaving no chance of escape for Reds striker Diogo Jota or his brother who was with him, as confirmed by the Spanish "Guardia Civil".

In the statement, Spanish authorities revealed a first explanation for the accident that took the life of Liverpool's Portuguese international.

"The information we have so far is that the car, a Lamborghini, suffered a traffic accident and went off the road due to a tire burst during an overtaking maneuver. The incident occurred at 00:30 (Portuguese time), in the municipality of Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora. The car caught fire and the two passengers inside it died."

When asked about the identity of the passengers and whether one of them was Diogo Jota, the Guardia Civil confirmed: "Yes, the Liverpool footballer and his brother, André Silva."

Meanwhile, a truck driver filmed Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota's Lamborghini burning just minutes after the accident. The truck driver himself has published the video, which shows the vehicle destroyed in flames, an extremely serious and shocking sight.

Ten days ago, the wedding with Rute Cardoso

Diogo Jota had just married his fiancée, Rute Cardoso, just 10 days ago. On his personal Instagram profile and on his wife's are photos of the ceremony and the "I do" that the couple exchanged on June 22. The photos showed the couple with their three children: Denis (2021), Duarte (2023) and a daughter born in 2024. He was due to return to Merseyside in a week to start preparations with the team.

Who was Diogo Jota?

The world of Portuguese, Spanish and English football is in shock. Diogo Jota was bought by Liverpool in 2020, who had taken him from another island club (Wolverhampton) paying 44.7 million euros. Since then he has been one of the most important players for the Reds with whom he has played 182 games, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.

Tribute to Diogo Jota

With the Merseyside club shirt, he had won three trophies: last season he had triumphed in the Premier League (2024-25) but he had also placed an FA Cup (2021-22) and a League Cup (2021-22) in the showcase. He had also recently celebrated success in the Nations League won with the Lusitanian representative team that defeated Spain in the final on penalties.

Diogo Jota began his career in his homeland with the youth team of Gondomar, before moving to Paços Ferreira's U19 team (with whom he also reached the first team). Atletico Madrid and Porto were the other teams he played for before moving to England.
