Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has criticised UEFA for the way it paid tribute to the late Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid, known as the "Palestinian Pele", after the European football body failed to mention the circumstances of his murder this week.
The Palestinian Football Federation said Al-Obeid, 41, was killed in an Israeli attack on civilians waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
In a short post on the X platform, UEFA called the former Palestinian national team player "a talent who gave hope to thousands of children, even in the darkest times."
Salah reacted on Saturday by writing: "Can you tell us how he died, where and why?"
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Bassil Mikdadi, founder of the website Football Palestine, said he does not expect UEFA to react to the criticism.
"UEFA has made no other reaction, and frankly, I would be surprised if they did," he said, citing the "total silence" of the football world and players' organizations since the start of the war in Gaza.
Even UEFA's tribute to al-Obeidi "was a surprise," Mikdad said.
"Suleiman al-Obeid is not the first Palestinian footballer to lose his life in this genocide. There are over 400, but he is undoubtedly the most well-known figure so far."
Salah, who is one of the Premier League's biggest stars, has previously called for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza during the nearly two-year-old war. However, some commenters who responded to his post questioned why it has taken him so long to respond to Israel's genocidal war.
The United Nations has stated that over 1,000 people have been killed near aid distribution areas and humanitarian convoys in Gaza since the start of the new aid distribution system with the GHF (an organization supported by the US and Israel).
