Premier League could ban bets from sponsorship on jerseys

Premier League teams may be banned from betting sponsors on their jerseys if the British government bill is passed for approval.

Half of the 20 Premier League teams have the names of betting companies on their shirts, as the British government aims to tighten laws against gambling.

Activists have welcomed the idea, but believe a ban would be "incoherent" if it did not apply to teams in all categories of English football.

The move would follow a recommendation from a House of Lords select committee in 2020, which said Premier League clubs should face a ban on jersey sponsorship, but Championship clubs should be given time to gradually remove their partnerships.

Clubs have been given time to negotiate and find other sponsors to place on their jerseys.

This means that the ban will come into force for the 2023–24 season and not earlier. The Premier League has previously said that "a self-regulating approach would offer a practical and flexible alternative to legislation that forcibly prohibits them".

The EFL, which is sponsored by Sky Bet, says banning sponsorship by betting companies would cost clubs 40 million pounds a year.

A recent YouGov poll said 1.4 million people in Britain have lost everything from fortune games with another 1.5 million at risk.
