Matthijs de Ligt, now a former Juventus defender, has spoken to ESPN about his transfer to the Whites in the summer of 2019:
"I chose to go to Juve with the idea that I would play more attacking football, at that time the coach was Maurizio Sarri", said the Dutchman.
"I thought that with him, after what I had seen at Napoli and Chelsea, we would have a style of play similar to that of Ajax. But, unfortunately, Sarri left only one year later".
Regarding the role in the defense, the young star of Bayern Munich has added: "I feel better on the right side in the center of the defense. At Juventus I played on the left at the beginning and it was difficult, then I switched places with Bonucci in the middle of the season.
"We were a good duo, we won the title. In the second and third year I often turned to the left. It's not that I didn't want to play there, but I knew I was safer on the right side."
In the end, regarding the differences between Juventus and Ajax, De Ligt said: "At Ajax, I pressed hard and took risks, while at Juventus there was a different way to defend. I played further back, because in general Italian football has a slower pace".
