The 0-1 victory in Serbia has enabled the Albanian national team to break away with four points against their Balkan rivals, in the qualifying Group K. Now, after six matches played, ours see themselves in second place with 11 points, while Serbia has played five matches and holds third place with seven points. The two consecutive losses led to the dismissal of coach Dragan Stojkovic from Serbia, showing the poor state of our rivals. Yesterday, Latvia and Andorra drew 2-2 in the other match.
Upcoming matches
With England on 15 points after five matches and almost securing first place in the group, the race will be on for second place. Albania's next qualifying match is against Andorra on November 13th, while three days later they host England in Tirana.
Even our Serbian rivals, who have a game in hand and are four points behind us, have a game against England in London. It is enough to remember that England won 0-5 a month ago in Belgrade.
Advance to the playoffs
With Albania and Serbia playing against England, more than ever our national team has the advantage for second place. A victory in Andorra with 99 percent would give us a place in the play-offs of the 2026 World Cup for the UEFA zone. It is enough that in Tirana our team does not lose against England (depending on other matches), which in 'Air Albania' will come calmly and with the World Cup ticket 'in its pocket'
Combinations
Serbia plays against Andorra and Latvia, two rivals that are passable on paper. Even if they get six points, ours with a victory in Andorra would remain with one more point and it will be precisely the matches against England that will decide the fate of the group.
With Serbia traveling to London and Albania hosting England in Tirana, the red and black team must not make a mistake in the next final, which is Andorra. If Albania and Serbia finish the group with equal points, ours would advance based on direct matches.
How the playoffs work
For the first time in history, the 2026 World Cup will be held with 48 teams. 16 European national teams will participate in the World Cup to be held in Canada, Mexico and the USA, while Albania's chances, after the magnificent success in Serbia, seem real.
The top 12 places in the groups will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup, while the remaining 4 places will be determined by the play-off phase.
How will the play-off phase for the 2026 World Cup work?
The 12 second-place teams from the qualifying groups participate in the play-offs, along with 4 teams from the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League based on group performance.
So in total, the second places and the 4 teams from the Nations League will form 8 pairs, from which the 4 teams that go to the World Cup will emerge, in addition to the first 12 places.
The second and third pots are expected to be the most delicate matches as the teams that are closest to each other in the FIFA rankings will face each other. Thus, in the second pot, which interests Albania even more, at the moment there are teams like Sweden, Poland, Czech Republic and Scotland. In the third pot there is Hungary, Slovakia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
So Albania, if it finishes the group in second place, will face two opponents determined by draw, in the "play-off" phase from the third pot.
