World Cup 2026/ How the play-off phase will work if Albania finishes the group in second place

For the first time in history, the 2026 World Cup will be held with 48 teams. 16 European national teams will participate in the World Cup to be held in Canada, Mexico and the USA, while Albania's chances, after the magnificent success in Serbia, seem real.

The top 12 places in the groups will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup, while the remaining 4 places will be determined by the play-off phase.

How will the play-off phase for the 2026 World Cup work?

The 12 second-place teams from the qualifying groups participate in the play-offs, along with 4 teams from the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League based on group performance.

So in total, the second places and the 4 teams from the Nations League will form 8 pairs, from which the 4 teams that go to the World Cup will emerge, in addition to the first 12 places.

So Albania, if it finishes the group in second place, will face two opponents determined by draw, in the "play-off" phase, to secure a ticket to the World Cup.
