De Bruyne named Premier League player of the year

Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne has been voted Premier League player of the season, while co-player Phil Foden was named best young player.

The Belgian midfielder scored 15 goals and recorded seven assists for City at the top of the league before the final day of the season on Sunday.

"Winning this award for the second time is an achievement I'm really proud of," he said.

Foden, 21, is the first player to win the award as the best young player in two consecutive seasons.

De Bruyne, 30, was selected after votes from the public on the Premier League website were combined with those of 20 Premier League club captains and a panel of football experts.

His City team-mate Joao Cancelo, Liverpool duo Mohamed Salam and Trent Alexander-Arnold, West Ham's Jarrd Bowen, Arsenal's Bukayo Saka, Tottenham striker Son Heung-min and Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse were also nominated for the accolade.

De Bruyne won this trophy even in the 2019–2020 season and with the current award was joined by Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nemanja Vidic, who have won this award more than once.

"There are so many qualities in the Premier League and it is a pleasure to be nominated among so many other great players who have had exceptional seasons for their clubs" added De Bruyne.

Manchester City are top of the Premier League and need victory over Aston Villa to secure the championship title. Liverpool trail by one point less and hope that in the event of victory over Wolves, Steven Gerard's Steven Gerard-led Aston Villa do the miracle, stopping Guardiola's City.
