The launch of the trial of Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini has been postponed by a day after Blatter said he was too ill to testify.

Once the most powerful people in world football, they are already being tried on charges of fraud and corruption.

But, Blatter said at a court hearing in Switzerland that he is unable to testify because of chest pains.

"The pain is great and I have difficulty breathing," the 86-year-old told the judge.

Judges at the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona allowed Blatter, the former president of world football's governing body FIFA, to give his testimony on Thursday.

Swiss prosecutors claim that a 2011 payment of 2 million Swiss francs (about 2 mln euros) made by Blatter to Platini, the former UEFA president, was illegal.

Both deny wrongdoing and say the transfer was late payment to former France captain Platini, 66, for his FIFA advisory work between 1998 and 2002.

The duo were expelled from football in 2015 and indicted in November last year.

Blatter and Platini's lawyers failed to move the trial to a local court, or refuse FIFA's civil request against them to recover the damage of 2 million Swiss francs.

The trial will end on June 22, while the decision is expected on July 8. If convicted, defendants can be sentenced to imprisonment of up to five years, or fine, in addition to returning the money in question.
