At the moment it is an innovation in the testing phase, but as of next July 1st it will become a new addition to the football regulations.
During the match between Juventus and Lazio, the change in the regulations regarding goalkeepers, designed to avoid wasting time, was applied for the first time.
They will only have 8 seconds to get the ball back into play, otherwise the referee will penalize them by awarding a corner kick to the opposing team instead of a throw-in as was the case until now.
While the goalkeeper held the ball in his hand, the referee began to count and, as soon as he reached the number 8, he awarded a corner kick in favor of Juve. This will be the procedure that the referees will adopt, who will in fact count with their fingers in the middle of the pitch to mark the passage of seconds.
It is unusual to see the referee counting with his hand raised, but this will be the scene that starting from next July 1st we will see on every pitch to implement the new rule. In reality, it is a change in the regulation announced by the IFAB, goalkeepers will have 8 seconds to put the ball back into play, otherwise they will be penalized with a corner kick in favor of the opposing team.
The rule was introduced to reduce time wastage, a topic that is increasingly being discussed.
