Prime Minister Edi Rama has commented from the UN podium on the protests in Tirana, linking them to what he described as the spread of fabricated narratives on social networks.
Speaking about what he called the "flamingo revolution", Rama said that a narrative about a false claim about the "Israeli occupation of the Albanian coast" had spread online.
He said that, although citizens had reason to protest, in his opinion, in this case the protests were also directed against a "phantom enemy."
"You have followed or learned about the so-called Flamingo Revolution. The fabricated narrative of an Israeli invasion of an Albanian coast that never happened.
It was fabricated and transmitted through channels that Albanians trusted. Different fictions entered different worlds, all in service of the same lie. The consequences were real, citizens had valid reasons to protest, but suddenly they started protesting against a phantom enemy. The algorithm did not ignite hatred, but discovered how to activate our hatred. This is the deception of the system
k as a service. Election interference no longer requires a television station or a piece of propaganda, it can operate with the determination of each voter. Democracy does not lose just a debate or simply a series of elections, but the common ground on which debate is possible and the opportunity to have it.
Sovereignty is not limited to borders, but to boundaries. In the 20th century, sovereignty meant control over land; today in Europe we are running like crazy to raise more and more money that we do not have to protect our lands, our skies, from a possible future war. But we are forgetting that in the century we live in, this must also mean the ability of a free society to protect the conditions where citizens form their own opinions," said Rama.
