The Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime decided this Tuesday to uphold the sentence for former Durrës mayor Vangjush Dako, who is expected to return to prison.
Today, the three judges of the GJKKO Engert Pëllumbi, Miliana Muça and Iliriana Olldashi , decided to leave in force the decision for the former mayor of Durrës, Vangjush Dako , who was initially sentenced to 4 years in prison, but after a shortened trial, his sentence was reduced to 2 years and 8 months in prison.
The GJKKO decided not to accept the appeal of the defendant Fiqiri Farruku and upheld the decision of November 25, 2024, which sentenced Vangjush Dako to 2 years and 8 months in prison for the charge of abuse of office.
While for the other three defendants, Fatmir Ejupi, Fiqiri Farruku and Adrian Bulku , the sentence of 2 years imprisonment with a summary trial was also upheld.
We recall that Vangjush Dako was arrested on June 6, 2023, and then released in February 2024. While for a year, Dako was under house arrest. Dako still has 10 days left in prison to serve, as he has served the rest of his sentence.
Vangjush Dako's sentence:
On November 25, 2024, the GJKKO decided to sentence the former mayor of Durrës, Vangjush Dako, to 2 years and 8 months in prison for abuse of office on two occasions.
While the other three defendants, Fatmir Ejupi, Fiqiri Farruku and Adrian Bulku, were sentenced to 2 years in prison with a summary trial, but these sentences were suspended and they were returned to probation by the GJKKO.

The published decision of the GJKKO states that Vangjush Dako is sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison in a combined sentence and summary trial, while the period of imprisonment is calculated for eight months from June 2023 to February 2024 and that of "house arrest", from February 2024 to the present.
Also, in application of Article 35/1 of the Criminal Code, "the defendant Vangjush Dako is deprived of the right to exercise public functions for a period of 5 years."
A 5-year disqualification from holding public office was also given to one of the other defendants, Fatmir Ejupi, in addition to 4 years of probation. The 2-year prison sentences for the three defendants in the case were suspended and returned to probation.
The November 21st hearing was postponed due to a lack of lawyers. On November 12th, SPAK filed a motion for the 4 defendants in the case, requesting 4 years of solitary confinement for the former mayor, which, if converted to a summary trial, would be reduced to 2.8 years in prison.
Vangjush Dako was arrested in June 2023 after being sentenced to 'prison arrest', but after 8 months, in February 2024, the GJKKO decided to change the security measure to 'house arrest' due to the expiration of the deadlines. In July of this year, the Special Court accepted the request of the former mayor of Durrës Vangjush Dako for a summary trial.
