Lawyer and former Minister of Justice of the "Rama 1" government, Ylli Manjani, has commented on the decision of the Supreme Court, which this Thursday once again left the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, in prison.

Invited to Euronews Albania, Manjani said that no one in politics is interested in Veliaj being released from prison, as he leveled accusations against the Socialist Party, claiming that they were the ones who put the mayor in prison.

Further, the former minister also criticized the Supreme Court, which he said does not act according to the law, but according to a culture of punitiveness.

"We are discussing the pressure that our court is under, intentionally or unintentionally, with the idea that the court is making a name for itself and fighting impunity. Essentially, this court that is fighting impunity has long since left the legal bed.

And it's not just about Veliaj. I don't know of a single public or political factor today who would be interested in Veliaj being released from prison.

Find me one, because I can't identify anyone, because the SP put him in jail. Where is Nesti Angoni from? The Angoni faction put him in jail, the rest of the SP forgot about him, he's no longer interested.

Politically, Rama and the SP have gone without a law and this discussion has no political motive.

Even those in the municipality say: "He's a good dog, why should he be released? He's fine there." These are what people say and this is the reality.

"And judges see these things: since they don't care about the person, let's leave him in there. It's sad, but this has nothing to do with the law, but with the culture of punishment," he said.
