US Charge d'Affaires  Nancy VanHorn delivered an important message today regarding respecting the country's Constitution.

VonHorn emphasized that the separation of powers, freedom of speech, and the rule of law are essential principles for a functioning democracy. In her speech,

US Charge d'Affaires Nancy VanHorn said that judges, prosecutors, members of civil society, and a free press are the defenders of the rights of every Albanian citizen.

"Honored guests, it is a privilege to stand before you today as we commemorate Constitution Day – a day that reminds us of the enduring power of the U.S. Constitution, which protects the rights of individuals and guides our nation toward justice and prosperity.

Constitutions are built on principles essential to a functioning democracy: the protection of individual rights, the separation of powers, freedom of speech, and the rule of law. These principles are not just abstract ideals; they are the foundation of trust between governments and their people. They ensure that justice is administered fairly, power is balanced, and the rights of every individual are respected.

Judges, prosecutors, members of civil society, and a free press are the defenders of the rights of every Albanian citizen. You have the power to ensure that justice is not just a word, but a reality for all Albanians. You have the responsibility to uphold fairness, transparency, and accountability. And you have the opportunity to strengthen trust between people and the institutions that serve them.

This work requires courage — the courage to make difficult decisions, to resist corruption, and to stand firm in the face of pressure. As you continue your life's work, remember that a constitution is more than a legal document. It is a living promise to protect rights, uphold justice, and build a better future for all.

"On this Constitution Day, we honor the courage of those who came before us by committing to these principles. Thank you for your dedication to this mission, and we hope that we will all find the courage to uphold the ideals that make democracy possible ," said VonHorn .
