Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani and Montenegro's Prime Minister Drinan Abbasovic exchanged replicas over the "Open Balkans" initiative.
During a panel discussion at the Southeast European Democracy Summit being held in Montenegro, Abbasovic said part of Montenegro's society opposes the "Open Balkans" because of Serbia's role in the initiative.
Earlier, Montenegro's leader had declared that he would attend the next "Open Balkans" meeting held in Ohrid, North Macedonia, facing widespread criticism for this.
"In my opinion, a part of society in Montenegro opposes it, just because it is against everything serbia is. They do not mind the initiative, but have a personal problem", Abbasovic said, and added that, in his opinion, "personal problems in politics often do not give the opportunity for any kind of vision", Abbasovic is quoted by Radio Free Europe.
"I am not committing to the 'Open Balkans' or the Berlin Process or any other initiative. I am committing to regional co-operation. Any initiative aimed at regional co-operation, all we can use for co-operation, is success," Abbasovic said.
To Abbasovic's comment, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani reacted.
"Whether anyone is a democratically elected leader, who believes in the values of rule of law, human rights and democracy, and is anyone a former minister of propaganda of the regime of [former yugoslavia leader Slobodan] Miloshevic, that must matter. Conversely, the order we are sending is that it doesn't matter if you are [Ukraine's president, Volodymyr] Zelensky or [Russia's president, Vladimir] Putin," Osmanstressed.
Kosovo rejects the "Open Balkans" initiative, insisting that Kosovo should be represented as equal, though, as an independent state within any process, including the "Open Balkans" initiative.
Osman added that "if we do not learn this lecture from the past, we will not be able to walk the right way at the time we are facing the war in Ukraine".
Osmani stressed that Kosovo is committed to regional co-operation, but that Kosovo's dissent for the "Open Balkans" initiative should be respected, because, as Osman put it, this state has shown its dedication "to do everything necessary for regional co-operation to work".
"We have extended the hand of co-operation to the country that made the genocide against us, without apology, without seeing remorse on their part, without criminals behind bars or brought to justice, without having about 2,000 disappeared in the war period, a country sleeping on mass graves. How can we show more than to extend the hand of friendship and co-operation?"
Abbasovic, responding to Osman, said no one is in a situation to choose government in another country.
Megjithatë, kryeministri i ri, Abazoviç e mbështet konceptin e kësaj nisme.
