No name has been submitted to the Presidency of the Assembly for the candidate to be elected President even in the third round. In the first three rounds that are now considered burnt, the President is elected with 84 votes. In the last two rounds, a simple majority of 71 votes will suffice for his election.

Today, around 10:00, the third ballot for the election of the president will take place, while there is no candidacy. After the failure of the first round, the majority and the opposition agreed that in the second and third rounds the minority would have the right to propose the name of the new Presidential candidate.

But the agreement lasted less than 24 hours, after the leader of the Democratic parliamentary group, Enkelejd Alibeaj, and the allies withdrew, after calling it a violation of the agreement by the majority, as according to them the latter refused to sign the candidates to propose the opposition, who would then go to the Assembly for a vote.

Recall that after the Constitutional changes made in 2008 in the first three rounds, the President of the Republic is elected with not less than 84 votes, thus seeking a qualified majority.

The goal was for the political forces in the Assembly in the first three rounds to find a consensual president, but even this time such a thing did not happen.

Meanwhile, in order to resolve the political stalemate in the Constitution, it is foreseen that in the fourth and fifth round the President of the Republic can be elected by a simple majority, ie the 71 votes needed for the election of the new head of state in the round of the fourth majority has.

But despite the public statements made by the head of the socialist parliamentary group Taulant Balla, that the majority would give an opportunity to the opposition to be part of the process for the election of the president in the fourth round in order to have a name consensual, even this offer was rejected by the opposition representatives themselves.

The chances are that in the fourth round we will have a name proposed by the majority and that is expected to pass with 71 votes.

Referring to the statements made by Prime Minister Edi Rama but also by other representatives of the majority, in the fourth round there will be a name that will be voted in the Assembly.

Now only the formalism of the third round is expected, which as we said above is destined to fail and then the meeting of the Conference of Presidents to set the deadlines for proposing a name for the new candidate, as well as the date when it will meet again Assembly to conduct the fourth round.

It is worth mentioning that on July 24 of this year, President Ilir Meta hands over the post of head of state in the hands of the new President, who is expected to be elected in June.
