Rama: Our goal is to turn Albania into a net energy exporter by 2030

The High Level Meeting of the Constituency of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank is taking place today in Tirana. The Prime Minister of the country, Edi Rama, was also present at this meeting, who stated that the goal until 2030 is for Albania to turn into a net exporter and for this reason he says that he is investing in solar and wind energy sources. .

Edi Rama: The financial system of our country shows elasticity and at the same time, it shows that it has a lot of stability and continuity. When we started this journey, the biggest problem we had was non-performing loans, which were around the 25% mark, while today the percentage of non-performing loans, although we have seen an increase in lending, we would like to see more credit, but the basis is very encouraging. You may be aware of our reform that we have undertaken and we have already managed to have a stable situation, not to increase the price of energy, although we have been challenged by the global energy crisis. Our goal is to turn Albania into a net exporter of energy by 2030 and for this reason we are investing in wind and solar energy sources and to be a country where electricity production is 100 percent renewable. We need to preserve what we have and expand the portfolio of the energy sector with all kinds of renewable energy sources.

During his speech, Prime Minister Rama also emphasized the growth of tourism in Albania and the income that this sector has brought to our country.

Edi Rama: It is a pleasure to have this annual meeting of the World Bank and the IMF and for the first time, it takes place in Albania. This happens at a time when the situation is not easy and Europe is facing special challenges, but this is one more reason for the importance of this meeting and why we believe that at this meeting, the discussions will be fruitful and at the end we will have some things on how to face the challenges. We are aware of the risks, but on the other hand, we have some creative ways to overcome these situations. Although the context is not easy, on the other hand I do not want to waste time to tell you how successful we have been with tourism, where in particular we are seeing a very strong growth and immediately after the pandemic, tourists are increasing and the airport we see that it is experiencing a positive trend and the airport of Tirana has been ranked first in Europe in terms of the level after the pandemic. We are ranked 3rd in terms of tourism growth, behind Qatar and Saudi Arabia. So it's encouraging to go forward and we've just got the numbers for January and we've had almost half a million tourists and our airport has surpassed you and many other airports and we can only imagine what the next season will be like, compared to the past, where many Italians have come. We are encouraged by the numbers and figures we have for employment and unemployment, while the big challenge remains to raise wages further so that we are able to hold off the fierce competition that is becoming strong from labor-demanding countries.
