Is the historic summit in Tirana a signal that the European Union is ready to welcome the first country from the Western Balkans? This is the question that the leaders and senior officials of the union faced on Tuesday when they sat down in front of the leaders of the Balkans to discuss the future of the region.

The EU Commissioner for enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi spoke in front of the microphone of Top News revealing details of the talks behind closed doors between the leaders of the EU and those of the union. Asked when the first country from the Western Balkans will join, Varheley revealed that it is highly likely that this historic step will be taken in 2024.

Commenting on the recent EP resolution, which demanded that Albania and other countries that have started talks, close the negotiations within 2030, the senior official says that his promise and commitment is that at least one of the countries of the region become part of the European family before the end of his mandate as commissioner in two years.

"This was my promise when I came to office. I still hope and believe that I can keep my word, closing all membership chapters with at least one of the Western Balkan countries within my mandate as commissioner. We will see and I am optimistic, but for this to happen I need the countries of the Western Balkans to speed up the reforms for membership." Varhelyi told Top News.

The commissioner also added that he has now fulfilled one of his promises, the opening of negotiations with Tirana and Skopje, and that according to him, this has opened the European path for our country.

Optimist was the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo. The Belgian leader declared in a statement for Top Neës that all the countries of the union agree that the progress from Albania and the other countries of the Balkans has been great.

But, according to De Croo, at the moment he cannot give a definite deadline for when the first country from the Balkans will enter the EU. He says that democratic reforms and the rule of law should be at the top of the expansion process for all countries of the Western Balkans.

The pressure on the EU countries, as Varheley admits, has increased after the European Parliament recently adopted a resolution demanding that the membership negotiations with Albania and other candidate countries should be fully completed in 2030.

Albania has so far opened the preface of the membership book: the screening process. According to the forecasts of European experts, the negotiations may take a decade, as is currently happening with Serbia and Montenegro, but the EP requests that this process be accelerated.
