The EU's high representative for foreign policy, Josep Borrell, has expressed the EU's support for Albania at the first intergovernmental conference being held in Brussels.

He said that today marks a great achievement and a result of many years of work for our country.

Borrell:  Today marks a great achievement and the result of many years of work. Albania will become a member of the EU and with this the EU is taking an important step towards its expansion. The Western Balkans is very important for the EU.

In this new phase, Albania will have the advantages of opportunities to speed up reforms as close as possible to the EU, building on the important work that has been done in previous years and bringing benefits to Albanian society as well.

We know that this comes with a price, and that high price is being part of some undesirable countries, but being part of the most desirable community that is the EU. You have 100% harmonization with the policies and sanctions that the EU has set .
