The DP and the SP "captured" the RTSH Steering Council: Petrit Beci, Rajmonda Bulku, Osman Mula, Bujar Kapexhiu, Robert Budina, Enio Civici, Alket Braho, Lorenc Vangjeli, Pano Xhixho and Zamira Kita

After a marathon of hearings with 67 candidates, the Education and Media Commission selected on Tuesday 10 new candidates for the Steering Council of Public Radio and Television, an institution that was dissolved by decision of the Assembly a few weeks ago following accusations of legal violations in the process of selecting candidates for the new director of RTSH.

According to a formula where the majority and the opposition propose 5 candidates, the new members of the Steering Council who are expected to be voted on soon in the plenary session are; Petrit Beci, Rajmonda Bulku, Osman Mula, Bujar Kapexhiu, Robert Budina, Enio Civici, Alket Braho, Lorenc Vangjeli, Pano Xhixho and Zamira Kita .

The commission also decided to propose as candidates for chairman of this council the painter Helidon Haliti and Fatjon Hoxhalli, currently an advisor to the Socialist Party parliamentary group and previously a media advisor to Niko Peles during his duties in the government as deputy prime minister and minister.

The selected names have caused concern among media freedom organizations about the politicization of this council due to the political background in their careers or political proximity to the Socialist or Democratic Party, which have a large part of them, and because the law provides that this institution should be composed of non-political people.

The Journalists' Association of Albania has reacted after the vote in the Assembly on the composition of the Steering Council of Radio Television of Albania.

AGSH has expressed disappointment over this vote, according to them, "the spokesperson for the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Blendi ÇUÇI; the external advisor to the Speaker of Parliament Elisa Spiropalit; the former Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Socialist Party, relieved of duty in 2024; a member of the DP National Council; a former DP MP" were also elected as members of the council.

According to the Journalists' Association, by electing the majority of political members, Parliament showed that narrow party interests prevailed over the public interest.

Reaction of the Journalists Association of Albania

The Journalists' Association of Albania expresses disappointment over Monday's vote in Parliament, where the members and the new chairman of the Board of Directors of Albanian Radio Television were elected.

The spokesperson of the Head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Mr. Fatjon Hoxhalli, was elected at the head of the Council by political consensus. Meanwhile, members of the Council were also elected: the spokesperson of the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Blendi ÇUÇI; the external advisor to the Speaker of Parliament Elisa SPIROPALI; the former Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Socialist Party, relieved of duty in 2024; a member of the National Council of the Democratic Party; a former member of the Democratic Party.

The dissolution of the RTSH Steering Council a few weeks ago, at the proposal of the Media Commission and with the vote of Parliament, seemed like a clear signal that the political parties had decided to put an end to political illegalities.

But by electing the majority of political members, Parliament showed that narrow party interests prevailed over the public interest.

Members of the Media Committee and then of Parliament today denied the public the opportunity for RTSH to be a dignified and politically uninfluenced institution.
