Edi Rama

Prime Minister Edi Rama has given an interview to "Corriere della Sera".

The Italian media starts the article with " Edi Rama prime minister for the fourth time in Albania ."

The leader of the Socialist Party says that he won thanks to his and the Socialist Party's persistence. He further adds that Albanians trust him thanks to the governing vision and not because of the weakness of the opposition.
Rama also reveals what the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, wrote to him after his fourth consecutive victory. Finally, he estimates that further transformation of the country will lead Albania towards the EU in 2030.

Full interview:

He wins among Albanians in Albania and the diaspora, holds the center-south and almost takes the north, the opposition's stronghold. Edi Rama secures another four years at the helm of the country of eagles.

The leader of the Socialist Party, now the longest-serving prime minister in the history of Balkan democracy, will be sworn in for a fourth consecutive term in September.

The popular vote — still in the process of being counted more than a day after the polls closed — currently gives it 82 seats out of 140 total, but could increase.

Sali Berisha, with his Democratic Party (center-right), secures about 50 mandates. Yesterday evening, after dozens of congratulatory phone calls, Rama answered questions from the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

Did you expect such a profound result after 12 years in power?

Rama:  Honestly, yes. Because we have worked hard to get here, speaking with deeds, clearly showing the path that must be followed for the Albania of the new generation, focusing on the renewal of generations on our lists, where we have also promoted many women, and organizing the party as a large team throughout the territory.

Why did Albanians elect the Socialist Party again?

Rama:  Because we have changed Albania with a clear vision and great perseverance. People are not stupid, as many politicians think, and they know how to distinguish between those who work seriously for the future of the country and those who are only concerned with empty words and pessimism. Yes, we have also made mistakes, and we have apologized. But we have never stopped, we have not hidden and we have not given up in the face of difficulties. We have raised an entire nation and made it feel proud of its name.

Does this result also indicate the lack of a real opposition?

Rama : I don't think we win because the opposition loses. We win because Albanians believe in the path we are following together.

What does the vote of the diaspora, which voted for you in the majority, tell you?

Rama:  It touches me a lot. Those who live abroad have a broader perspective and are more demanding. They do not vote out of nostalgia, but with clear judgment. It is a vote of confidence from those who have left the country, but not Albania. And if the diaspora trusts us, it means that we are conveying an image that makes them proud.

Have you communicated with Giorgia Meloni? Has she congratulated you?

Rama : Yes, she sent me a message like a sister to a brother.

What will you do during the next four years in government?

Rama:  We will complete Albania's great European construction site. Our objective is to close the accession negotiations by 2027. In the meantime, we will continue to modernize the country, strengthen the rule of law and the economy, support families and make the country's transformation irreversible in every direction. Every day, with humility and determination.

You say that Albania will join the EU in 2030. Some experts say later. How do you respond?

Rama:  Experts are often right, but they have never changed the course of history. This is what people and determined leaders do. I do not make predictions, but I talk about objectives — and in this case we have a common objective with Brussels. If Albania continues to do the tasks as it has done so far, then it will be fully ready in 2030.
