On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of Albania's independence, New York City Mayor Eric Adams organized a special gathering on Tuesday, during which he spoke about the role of the Albanian-American community in the development of the city. In an interview for the Voice of America, Mr. Adams said that the Albanian-Americans in New York represent the values that are part of his governing program, which, as he said, adds to the importance of this community in the city he leads. Albanian-American activists and representatives of Albania also spoke at this ceremony, who expressed their gratitude for the American contribution to the Albanian issue.
The Mayor of New York, Eric Adams, hosted the Albanian-American community at the official residence of the mayor of the city, called "Gracie Mansion", in a ceremony dedicated to the 110th anniversary of Albania's independence.
Mr. Adams told the Voice of America that the decision to organize this gathering in the surroundings of this well-known historical center was not accidental.
"When I open the doors of the "Gracie Mansion" residence to a community like the Albanian-American one, I want to convey the message that we know you, you are part of the city and that this is your home just as it is my home. That's why we decided to do this organization on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of Albania's independence", said Mr. Adams.
The mayor of New York City spoke about the values represented by the Albanian-American community, which, as he said, go hand in hand with his governing program.
"We believe in public safety, we believe in education, we believe in families, we believe in supporting small businesses. This is the program I ran for mayor of New York with. Having a community like the Albanian one, which is in line with my program and the other communities with which we are moving the city forward, is a blessing. This community represents what I believe in, to have a healthy environment for our children and families," Mr. Adams told VOA.
In his speech to the audience, former member of the New York City Council and activist Mark Gjonaj expressed his pride in the achievements and the role that Albanians play in America today.
"You serve on the front line. You are part of the military, the NYPD, the fire department. Today, Albania is part of the United Nations Security Council. You are part of boards, decision-making institutions and schools. I am very proud of our achievements", said Mr. Gjonaj.
The Ambassador of Albania to the United Nations, Ferit Hoxha, said that these and other advances of the Albanians would be impossible without the help of the United States, for which, as he said, the Albanian people are always grateful.
"Every child in Albania learns and knows that we should be grateful for the contribution of American President Woodrow Wilson for the independence of the Albanian state. Every child and every Albanian knows that they should always be grateful to the United States for Kosovo's independence. These are things that we cannot and must not forget", said Mr. Hoxha.
Activist Mark Gjonaj said that Albanian-Americans are lucky to live on American soil, the place where you can preserve and appreciate heritage, culture and language, while he reminded the attendees of what he called the obligation to contribute to the homeland.
"Imagine if we were in our hometown. And those who are there were here today. What would we ask of them? We have a debt that is not washed away by a deed or a duty, but our whole life, we must do our best for our people, especially in our homeland", he said.
A rich cultural program was part of this ceremony.
This is not the only activity organized by the municipality of New York on the occasion of the Independence Day of Albania. A day ago, the Albanian flag was raised in the center of New York.
Similar ceremonies have been organized in other parts of the United States./ VOA
