EC President Ursula von der Leyen presented her plan for the Western Balkans, at the end of the Berlin Process summit, which was held this Monday in Tirana.

This plan contains 4 pillars and as Von der Leyen himself pointed out, it has the potential to double the economies of the Western Balkan countries.

"We must bring our economies forward and speed up reforms for membership. This is why I presented our growth plan to the leaders. The new growth plan has the potential, if implemented, to double the economy of the Western Balkan countries within this decade. There are 4 pillars.

The first pillar of the plan is to bring the Western Balkans into the common market. We practically open the door of the common market in 7 key areas for the companies of the Western Balkan countries.

The second pillar is that the Western Balkans must complete its common regional market. If they fill this market, it could increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Western Balkans by 10 percent. Therefore, the countries of the Western Balkans should open the market with their neighbors, 5 neighboring countries and partners.

The third pillar is reforms. If we want to give the countries of the Western Balkans access to the common European market, we must have the same rules and standards. This means that reforms are necessary and these reforms will bring the countries of the Western Balkans closer to membership. These reforms will also make the countries of the Western Balkans even more attractive to European investors and will make our respective economies, which is very important, come together. Because today we have a situation where the economies of the Western Balkans are 35 percent of the European average. So a lot of work needs to be done.

The fourth pillar of the plan is, if the reform efforts are carried out, they will receive in response an increase in funds from the EU for investment. In other words, we have proposed an investment package of 6 billion, consisting of 2 billion in the form of grants and 4 billion in loans. So investments and reforms, the funds will be released the moment the reforms are fulfilled. It works very well in the European Union and I am very convinced that it will also work in the Western Balkans".
