Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi called for more patience from Albania on the issue of opening negotiations. At a joint conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama while in Tirana, Varhelyi said he was working with Bulgarian and Macedonian officials on the veto.
Given the war in Ukraine, the Enlargement Commissioner said that all opportunities should be used to establish stability in the Balkans.
" Let me return to some less joyful topics. We also discussed the war in Ukraine and agreed that it should end immediately. We appreciated the important role that Albania is playing. A true partner of ours has been shown.
The other big important topic is when the first intergovernmental conference will be held. I'm on a tour of the Western Balkans. We should definitely use everything we have on hand. We can not have a war in Europe and not use all the opportunities to stabilize BP. It is true that in this process we not only look for stability but can set it long-term.
Therefore I can not give any time to those involved not to do what needs to be done. Let's take this decision to the table. If we do not get them then it means we are giving up that mandate. We highly appreciate Albania's patience. I ask for a little more patience on your part. " This work should be done during the French presidency ," he said.
