The elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, spoke from prison to the Greek media " Alpha ", giving the message that he continues to stay in prison illegally.
Beleri, who is also a candidate for MEP from the party of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, said that he gets strength from the support of the residents of Himara, but also of all Greeks.
"My goal was to take office as mayor of Himara Municipality. Since the Albanian regime and Mr. Rama control the justice system and almost all the powers in Albania, in a coup they did not allow me to take the duties entrusted to me by the people of Himara", said Beleri.
He called his imprisonment for a year "injustice and trouble", but added that he had taken these into account when he entered the battle for the mayor of Himara.
"The support of the Himario people gives me strength and courage, now the support of all Greeks. You cannot imagine how many messages of support I receive from many of my compatriots from all over Greece," he added.
As he pointed out, "at no time did I think of making a compromise with the Albanian regime"
"Our fight is right and in the end we will win", he said emphatically.
Fredi Beleri also referred to the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who during the 11 years he has been in power "has divided into good and bad the Greeks who live and work in Albania, his subordinates and those who are opponents.
I had chosen to be his opponent, not for any ideology or for any personal interest, but because I saw that all his decisions as prime minister were against Himariots and Greeks, the local residents".
Regarding his candidacy for MEP, he said that "it is a great obligation, a great honor given to me by the Greek Prime Minister".
Mayor-elect Himaras closed with a message for the Greeks:
"My election to the European Parliament, if it is done with the help of God and, of course, Greeks everywhere, will give me the opportunity to continue my fight for democracy and the rule of law. We must come out of this battle proud and free. Their strength gives me strength to endure and take things further. Let's take the voice of the Greek minority to Europe".
