Fatos Lubonja: Here's why they are keeping Erion Veliaj in prison

Analyst Fatos Lubonja commented on today's decision by the Supreme Court regarding Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, rejecting his request for release on bail, while he is accused of abuse of office.

Invited to the studio of the show "This Week" on News24, he said that Veliaj is being held in prison both for political balance but also for the political games played by Prime Minister Edi Rama.

If Veliaj were released today, then according to the analyst, people would think that "justice has been served."

"To be clearer, the issue is how much we are dealing with a justice system that decides according to laws and independence, and how much its fate was decided by balances, politics, games and interventions, how much politics intervenes on Rama's part.

"For me, Veliaj is a counterweight who should remain in prison even for the accusations made against the two mayors, the leaders of the opposition, because otherwise the justice reform will be exposed, they will say Veliaj came out, AKSHI came out, or they will say they got away with it altogether," he said.

For Lubonja, the technical argument is that Veliaj's release constitutes a threat to destroy evidence and other circumstances.

But even the fact that he was released, he must return to duty in the Municipality of Tirana and this would create problems with Rama's previous statements that he wanted to replace him with early local elections in Tirana.

"From a technical point of view, she stands out, because they say she is dangerous, she destroys evidence, makes threats, etc., plus she creates another problem that she can return to the Municipality if she is released, because even the problems or statements with Mr. Rama, after being released, she must return to the Municipality."

"There is also the system, what part does Mr. Veliaj have in this system, what role has he played in relation to Edi Rama," said the analyst.
